Demonstrating Responsibility in the Fight Against the Pandemic
At the beginning of 2020, when COVID-19 broke out, Professor Wang Jian was visiting his parents in his hometown of Tianjin with his family on January 23. Noticing the development trend of the epidemic, he decided to cancel the rest of his holiday that day. By the second day of the Lunar New Year, he returned to Changsha and promptly established COVID-19 prevention and control measures at the company. He also led the R&D team to launch stem cell technology projects aimed at exploring treatments for COVID-19.
After the company’s “Clinical Demonstration of Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells for COVID-19” was approved as the first batch of emergency special projects by the Department of Science and Technology of Hunan Province for epidemic control, Professor Wang Jian led the team to initiate clinical research with multiple hospitals quickly, and achieved several breakthroughs in less than a month. During the pandemic, Professor Wang Jian and his team prepared batches of stem cell formulations overnight and delivered them to hospitals in Hunan and Hubei provinces in the early morning, enabling treatments to begin the same morning and ensuring optimal efficacy. In total, 18 batches comprising 51 doses of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell formulations were administered, successfully treating 19 severe and critical patients, making significant contributions to the scientific fight against COVID-19.

Meet the Expert: The “Cell Craftsman” Dedicated to the Industry for Over 20 Years!
In the resume of Professor Wang Jian, Executive President of Yuanpin Biotech, there are many “firsts”: One of the direct founders of China’s first stem cell bank — the National Tissue Engineering Stem Cell Bank; person isolated China’s first hematopoietic stem cells from umbilical cord blood; one of the primary drafters of China’s first operating procedures for umbilical cord blood hematopoietic stem cell banks — Code for Cell Banking Facility Quality Management; and one of the first professionals engaged in stem cell industrialization in China. Yet, most importantly, he has dedicated 20 years of focused research, carrying the great responsibility of supporting human health through the power of small cells.
Recorded human history spans over five thousand years, but it was not until 1990 that humans began to study themselves, starting with the study of human genes. Professor Wang Jian says, “Many human diseases are not caused by external factors; they must be addressed through internal mechanisms, at the cellular level. So, we began studying cells”. In the late 1990s, the concepts of stem cells and regenerative medicine were first proposed in China. It was at this time that Professor Wang Jian gave up a richer research platform in the United States to return to China and dedicate himself to stem cell and regenerative medicine research, personally witnessing the rise of China’s stem cell industry. Traditional medical treatments were often ineffective for many refractory diseases, fueling an urgent demand for novel technologies such as stem cell therapy.
Professor Wang Jian emphasizes that pursuing a career in stem cells requires sincerity in quality, compassion for humanity’s suffering, a love to alleviate people’s pain, and determination to build a strong national cause and industry. With technological advances, stem cells and regenerative medicine will become new breakthroughs in human life sciences and medical diagnosis and treatment, continuously benefiting patients. Scientific research is a long and arduous journey. As one of the earliest pioneers in stem cell industrialization in China, Professor Wang Jian isolated China’s first hematopoietic stem cells from umbilical cord blood and directly founded the country’s first stem cell bank. He was also a primary drafter of the Self-Discipline Standard of Stem Cell Preparation Quality Management and Code for Cell Banking Facility Quality Management, standards developed under the China Stem Cell Industry Association. He has witnessed the breakthrough of China’s stem cell industry from zero to one.
With the rapid development of biological cell technology and industry worldwide, “cell therapies and their clinical translation” has become a major topic in China’s “13th Five-Year Plan” for health security. In recent years, China has provided strong support for stem cell and translational research.
